Friday, November 30th, 2007

The Nintendo DS set a sales record last week (between November 18 – 24), selling more than 653,000 units! The previous title holder? The Game Boy Advance, moving 600,000 for the same time period in 2005. Well done Nintendo, well done. (more…)

Microsoft Updates Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Today Microsoft updated the Xbox 360, adding…83 new Xbox games to it’s backwards compatibility list. I hope I counted that right. They still didn’t add Beyond Good and Evil, so I guess I’m never going to be able to play that game. Hey, at least we got NHL 2005, I’m sure tons of people have been dying to play that on the 360. Here’s the whole list…

Awesome Radical Retrospective: Arkanoid

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Arkanoid was originally an arcade game developed by Taito in 1986 and later ported over to the NES. You control the “Vaus”, a space ship that basically acts as a paddle to bounce a ball against multicolor bricks. Some bricks take more than one hit to destroy and the player can grab upgrades along the way (expand the Vaus, multiple balls, or lasers). Once all the bricks are cleared on the stage, you advance to the next stage. However, if you miss the ball and it goes behind you, you lose a life.

Namco-Bandai Announces New Wii RPG

Monday, November 26th, 2007

The official site for the upcoming Namco-Bandai RPG has gone live and you can check it out here. What does it all mean? Well, the game’s title is Fragile and it’s a dungeon-crawler. The game is being co-developed by tri-Crescendo (they created the PS2 Japanese only Venus & Braves, which I always wanted to play, and also worked with Monolith Soft and Bandai Namco on Baten Kaitos, Baten Kaitos Origins, and Eternal Sonota).

Virtual Console Monday: 11/26/07

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Double Dribble, Vegas Stakes, and Ecco Jr. I think I only played Ecco Jr. (I got scared playing it, fear of deep water), so I can’t say if the other two are awesome and/or radical. What I do remember is seeing Vegas Stakes in bargain bins everywhere…you couldn’t escape it. The image of that box is burned into my brain:

Starcraft II: The Story So Far

Starcraft II The Story So Far

Blizzard has a nice right up over at starcraft2.com detailing the Starcraft storyline leading up to Starcraft II, which takes place four years after the events of Starcraft: Brood War. I never really paid a lot of attention to the story, so this little write-up is a great refresher. I think I just have a problem remembering who’s who in a story when there are more then like 4 characters involved in a story.

PS3 Beats Wii in Japan

PS3 Beats Wii in Japan

For the second week in a row, Sony’s PS3 has outsold the Wii in Japan. Famitsu publisher Enterbrain lists Wii sales at roughly 36,000 and PS3 sales at 53,000 for the week ending November 18. Who knew that new 40GB PS3 would be so popular? Howard Stringer, Sony’s CEO did. In fact, he said the recent PS3 success “was planned by the PlayStation group.” You would think Sony would have planned this from the start instead of waiting until now, but what do I know.

Galaxy Vs. Sunshine: They Look the Same to Me

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

I can’t really tell if there is a huge difference between the two, graphically. Obviously Galaxy looks somewhat better, I’m just commenting on the fact that there isn’t a massive difference between the two. Not that the graphics matters to me that much, I’m sure it’s an amazing game. Graphics aside, since Galaxy doesn’t revolve around Mario cleaning graffiti off of walls it’s instantly ten times better…I was not a big fan of Sunshine.

The thing that doesn’t make sense to me is why Nintendo would not want to focus on making improvements in graphics as well as innovations in game play. I understand where Nintendo stands on the issue, game play first, graphics second, but why couldn’t the Wii have both and make everyone happy?
