Wii Shortages Are Not Cool Says Reggie

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Poor Nintendo…selling out of Wii’s has been causing huge problems for them. Constant shortages of Nintendo’s Wii console and a huge demand for its DS Lite are causing all sorts of planning issues for the company, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said recently in an interview.

The level of demand we are facing complicates all of our future business planning,” Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, told Reuters in an interview. “All of that becomes a much tougher exercise until we have supply and demand curves that intersect.”

Unable to accurately forecast how many Wiis will be sold in the coming months, Nintendo is finding it difficult to plan for new games, such as “Wii Fit,” an upcoming physical exercise game that uses a pressure-sensitive board.

I don’t really understand why that would be a problem…if you ship x number of units, you will sell that many units…use that to calculate how many Wii’s will be sold. Once you stop selling out of them start using those numbers.

He also had this to say about retailers bundling Wii’s:

“Retailers have already been given feedback that we are not big fans of that. We think it masks some of the price advantage we have versus our competition and, frankly, the consumer should decide what they want,” Fils-Aime said. He added, “We don’t have to remind retailers of the strength we have right now. We are simply making an observation and that reinforces our point quite nicely with retailers.”

Take that, retailers.

I have a hard time caring, really. I understand you can’t instantly snap your fingers and produce more Wii’s but it’s been over a year, cry me a river.

I Can’t Wait for Etrian Odyssey 2

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Honestly, this might be one of the worst “trailers” ever, but it’s Etrian Odyssey 2 so it’s OK. I don’t know why the first Etrian Odyssey wasn’t more popular, it’s a really great RPG. It’s tough at first, but once you get into it it’s great. Regardless, Etrian Odyssey 2 is going to be awesome. The trailer looks exactly like the start of the first one, where the soldier asks you to map out the first floor…I imagine the Japanese is saying something like “Suddenly you see a soldier wearing a crazy mask with no apparent eye holes appear out of the forest.” There’s another trailer after the link, but if you can’t read Japanese I wouldn’t bother.

Pixel Junk Monsters – Awesome

Thursday, December 20th, 2007

Wayyyy back in the olden days, when Warcraft III was all the rage and World of Warcraft was just a glimmer in Blizzard’s eye (OK, not that long ago), I used to love playing Warcraft III custom tower defense games. Basically, packs of monsters would run down a path trying to get to your base. You would try to kill them all by building towers along the sides of the path. If too many got by, you lost. The more you killed, the more money you got, the better towers you could get. Of course the monsters would get tougher and tougher, and if you missed any you wouldn’t get the money for killing them, and it was a downward spiral from there. There’s tons of different towers that you can make, some towers are better against certain types of monsters while others slow down the monsters so your towers have a longer amount of time to kill them.

Pixel Junk Monsters is basically tower defense, but I don’t think that’s a bad thing. The music is pretty rad. And old old tower defense games didn’t have a crazy looking builder like this game, you just had a crappy peon.

Duke Nukem Forever Trailer

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007

OK, seriously, is this game ever going to come out? 10 years of developement…how do I get a job where I can work for 10 years and have absolutely nothing to show for it except for a 32 second trailer? How is 3D Realms still in business?

Resident Evil Degeneration Trailer

Monday, December 17th, 2007

Yeah, I don’t know what to say really…it’s a CGI Resident Evil movie with, unsurprisingly, zombies. And probably zombies on planes, who knows. The screen was flashing so much I couldn’t really tell what was going on. I guess I’m glad it’s CGI, it won’t have Milla Jovovich in it. Without Milla Jovovich, I won’t have to ask Liz “Isn’t that the girl from Run Lola Run?” I always get those two confused. I don’t know why, they don’t really look that alike. Then I can’t remember which one was in The Fifth Element. It’s this whole long, awkward conversation because I’m always wrong and I can never remember I’ve been wrong about it five times before.

Crisis Core Hitting North America This Spring

I was beginning to get worried that Crisis Core wouldn’t be coming to the North America…boy was I totally wrong. The latest Final Fantasy VII spin-off officially has a release date of March 25, 2008. Some other dates of note:

  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (Nintendo DS) – March 11, 2008
  • Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors (Nintendo Wii) – February 26, 2008
  • The World Ends With You (Nintendo DS)- Spring 2008

I Can’t Get Into Mass Effect

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Right before Mass Effect came out I started getting really excited about the game. I had watched all the trailers I could find, read everything that was out there, and it seemed like this was going to be a great game play experience. The Tuesday it came out I picked up the game and couldn’t wait to get home from work to play it. What could go wrong with a Bioware RPG, right?

After playing the game for a few days I’ve completely stopped. I can’t pick it up anymore, all the “little things” wrong with the game had started to add up, and I just wasn’t having fun playing it. I’ve heard the good out weights the bad, but for me it was the opposite.

Castle of Shikigami III Coming to Wii

Aksys Games announced today that it would be bringing vertical-shmup Castle of Shikigami III to the Wii next year. Vertical-shmups are always cool, so I’m really looking forward to this one. The Wii needs more stuff like this. “10 memorable characters” in a vertical-shmup should be interesting. The whole press release is after the link…

Barrel Physics in Crysis

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

If I even tried to do this on my computer it would just blow up. I don’t know how any computer can stand up to 3,000 barrels moving around and interacting with one another like this. This is totally awesome.

I want a new computer now.
