Monday, December 29th, 2008

This week’s Wii-kly update brings two new WiiWare games and one virtual console game: Zoda’s Revenge: Star Tropics II, Cue Sports – Pool Revolution, and Maboshi’s Arcade. Cue Sports and Maboshi Arcade are both WiiWare games, and Zoda’s Revenge is a port for the virtual console originally on the NES.

Suda51 on No More Heroes 2

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

One of the big downsides to the original No More Heroes, for me at least, was the Santa Destroy open environment. I’d run into walls that weren’t there, there wasn’t actually much to do in it, I felt like Santa Destroy was just generally annoying and an after thought. Well, Suda51, in an interview with GameSetWatch, mentioned he wasn’t happy with it, either.

When we first spoke, you talked about how you wanted to make an open-world game. No More Heroes is kind of along the path to that. Are you going to take that further into the user sandbox environment with the second game?

Goichi Suda: Yeah, we’ll once again manage to do what we want to do with realizing the open world, but expect big changes for No More Heroes 2’s open world.

Hopefully that means it won’t suck so much this time around. He also talks a bit about Flower, Sun and Rain, which is coming out in U.S. on the DS and, in traditional Goichi Suda style, seems insane.

Free Radical Up For Sale

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

Following up on a previous story, Free Radical is not closing down, but is now officially up for sale. 140 of the companies employees will be let go at the beginning of the year, leaving only 40 workers remaining. If you’re a fan of Free Radical games, it’s founder, Steve Ellis, left and created a new studio, called Pumpkin Beach, along with a handful of programmers.

Castle Crashers Finally Getting Patched

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

Sure, it’s been like forever since Castle Crashers was released. It was really fun but there were a ton of problems with the game such as data loss issue, networking issues, and other bugs such as these. Well, The Behemoth and Microsoft will finally be patching the game today, hopefully addressing the various issues players have been experiencing.

New Final Fantasy XIII Screens

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

A few new screens have surfaced for Final Fantasy XIII in V-Jump, a Japanese video game and manga magazine.

There are a few details about the game we have been able to decipher despite knowning no Japanese. There appears to be a very prominent red-headed female character that is reminiscent of Rikku from Final Fantasy X. The gameplay screens are hard to decode, as the menu system looks a bit different and disjointed by comparison to previous FF games. Also, FFXIII appears to stay the course set by FFXII by showing enemies on the field rather than throwing players into random battles.

Factor 5 Shutting Down?

Sunday, December 21st, 2008

Kotaku has reported that Factor 5, the creators of Liar and the Rogue Squadron series, has closed it’s doors. Factor 5 is just one of many recent video game companies that has either shut its doors or laid off a large number of employees. A post over at the IGN boards by Matt Casamassina leaked the rumor:

(Casamassina) [I w]as hoping the rumors weren’t true. Contacted Julian over at F5 to shed some light, but he didn’t get back to me. Got an e-mail from an inside source tonight:

“Hi Matt,

How have you been? Haven’t seen you guys since E3. I hope that you’re doing well!

[Redacted] wanted me to contact you with some late breaking news. We just learned from inside sources that developer Factor 5 has officially closed their doors as of today. That’s some pretty big news considering that those guys have been around for quite a while. It’s definitely a real shame! I hope that this information is helpful to you. Take care, and please say hi to Bozon for me.”

New Resident Evil 5 Boxart

Free Radical Shuts Down

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

The developers of Time Splitters and Haze, Free Radical, have reported shut down permanently. Apparently all the employees came to work to find themselves locked out of the building, which is a pretty dick way to shut down a company. I mean seriously, is that necessary? I guess they had a meeting later in the day to officially say “It’s Over” (presumably after opening the building, or, perhaps, in the parking lot). Anyway, Haze kind of sort of sucked, but they were working on a Time Splitters sequel, which was a pretty cool series.

Atlus Announces The Dark Spire

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

The Dark Spire is a first person role playing game for the DS. Seems a bit like Etrian Odyssey, but darker, it looks really cool. There is a “classic” interface (crappy graphics) and a “modern” interface (less crappy graphics).

Street Fighter IV Collector’s Edition

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Street Fighter IV Collector’s Edition stuff, for North America. I wonder what the “secret additional downloadable content” will be?

1. The game (duh)
2. A limited-edition (ie., not sold anywhere else) figurine – Ryu in the PS3 box, C. Viper hotness in the 360 flavor. Decisions, decisions…
3. Street Fighter IV: The Ties That Bind: a 65 minute anime movie — created by Studio 4C — that sets up the story of SFIV by explaining events post-SFII. BluRay disc in the PS3 box! The Xbox version is a 360 game disc that outputs the movie at 720P, not a DVD.
4. A mini-strategy guide from Prima, written by the same people doing the full-on guide and illustrated by Udon Comics
5. CD soundtrack. Rock SFIV stage chunez in your car!
6. …Plus some secret additional downloadable content that we’re not quite ready to reveal at this point. Look for more announcements soon!
