Star Guard is a pretty awesome retro platformer, without being as annoying or tedious as a retro platformer. The game uses a great checkpoint system, every so often it saves your progress so if you die you don’t restart the whole level. The story is pretty awesome, too. “Guide the spaceman through the castle and defeat the wizard.” And shoot lots of stuff. It’s also a finalist for Excellence in Design in the 12th annual Independent Games Festival. AND it’s totally free, available for the Mac and PC.
