Square Enix E3 Lineup

Wednesday, July 9th, 2008

Square Enix has a hell of a lot of games coming out…interestingly, Final Fantasy XIII isn’t on the list, which kind of sucks but at the same time is OK because I don’t own a PS3 yet. Regardless, there are still a ton of great games coming out, the Chrono Trigger remake should be cool, DRAGON QUEST: Chapters of the Chosen, Star Ocean: Second Evolution, The Last Remnant…I just hope they don’t lose focus with so much going on…

The complete list is after the link…

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King Review

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King

Before I actually begin this review I think I should make it clear that I really didn’t like Crystal Chronicles. As a fan of the more “traditional” Final Fantasy games, I found Crystal Chronicles to be extremely lacking, just a half-assed attempt to put a “Final Fantasy” title on the Gamecube. So, when I heard about Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King and saw all the screen shots, which made the game look very similar to it’s Gamecube predecessor, I was instantly turned off. However, after hearing more about it, I realized My Life as a King is a completely different game and decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I was pleasantly surprised and my prejudice against the Crystal Chronicles name was quickly washed away. My Life as a King is a unique game play experience that combines two different game genres (RPG’s and city-building games such as Simcity) to create something truly memorable.

Dragon Quest IV DS

There’s been no official announcement from Square Enix, but an official Dragon Quest IV site has shown up through Square Enix North America. The site also reveals the games release date of September 16th! It goes on to tease information about Dragon Quest V and VI U.S. releases, but no release dates are mentioned. I can’t wait, Dragon Quest games are always awesome.

Crisis Core – Worst Level Up System, Ever

Crisis Core Level Up Is Horrible I hate You

I love Final Fantasy VII, VII and III (VI) are my two favorite Final Fantasy games to date. So, any new Final Fantasy VII spin-off game that comes out is always something I’m interested in. Anyway, picked it up over my long absence and I’ve pretty much liked everything about it, the battles are pretty fun, the CG scenes are amazing…but the level up system is seriously pissing me off.

Basically, it’s based (largely) on luck. Three wheels spin around in a slot machine fashion, and if all three land on 7, you level up. I understand that there is a hidden experience counter, and you gain experience per enemy killed, and the more experience you get the more likely you are to level up. However, I’ve gone through a couple “Very Hard” ranked missions and not leveled up at all. It’s frustrating because all I have left are “Hard” or “Very Hard” missions, and I’m not gaining any levels going through these really hard missions.

I mean, whose idea was it to, in my opinion, ruin what could have been a great game by throwing this in? Seriously, does anyone like the idea of randomly leveling up?

The World Ends With You Gameplay Trailer

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

I’m curious about this game for two reasons. First, it’s a Square-Enix game, so I’m thinking it will turn out well. Second, the music seems really interesting. Overall, it just seems really different. More information about The World Ends With You is available here.

Dragon Quest Swords Release Date

Square-Enix announced today that Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and The Tower of Mirrors will be released on February 26th in North America. Also, the North American release will feature bonus content including a new mode, “Payback Mode”, and four hidden bosses. “Payback Mode” seems totally awesome, I don’t know what it is, but it’s cool.

Square Enix Announces New DS Game: The World Ends With You

The World Ends With You

From the makers of Kingdom Hearts comes the latest Square Enix game, The World Ends With You, for the DS. The game is set in Shibuya, the “coolest district in Tokyo.” The main character’s name is Neku, who wakes up one morning to find a message on his phone saying he has seven days before he “ceases to exist”. Creepy. Then things get even more strange:

Only with the coolest fashions, friends and fighting skills can Neku restore hope to the city’s population and prevent being stricken from existence altogether!

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker Initial Impressions

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker

I picked up Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker (DS) yesterday and I’ve been able to play the game for a good two or three hours so far. I’ve never played a Dragon Quest Monsters game before, so it’s all new to me, even though I’ve seen all the monsters before in other Dragon Quest games. Anyway, here are my impressions, so far… (more…)

Wine and Video Games, a Perfect Match

Wine no Hajimekata DS Comes With Wine

Wine no Hajimekata DS is a Square Enix game about wine. I honestly can’t find out anymore information about the game. Does it tell you what wines go well with what meals? How to identify a good wine compared to a bad wine? I have no idea. Wikipedia has nothing, and IGN simply has this: (more…)
