Sony Interactive Entertainment recently revealed that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has crossed another salient mark with over 50 million units sold in just three years since its launch in November 2020. The spike in sales in 2023 is mainly attributed to the release of new popular games, solidifying its position in the global gaming community. Jim Ryan, President and CEO of the company, expressed gratitude to the supporters and asserted the availability of enough PS5 consoles for the current holiday season.
Remarkably, this achievement places the PS5 as the 15th best-selling gaming console of all time based on unit sales. It surpasses the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) which sold marginally above 49 million units and is closely trailing the Xbox One with around 58 million units sold since its release in 2013.
Notably, the PlayStation 2 retains the top position as the best-selling console ever, boasting over 155 million units sold during its lifespan. These rankings underline PlayStation’s longstanding influence and relevance across the global gaming landscape, with the PS5 set to climb further.
