Nintendo’s decision to discontinue online services for 3DS and Wii U led to concerns about preservation of content, specifically for the Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past DLC maps. Fortunately, Twitter user Sackchief had a strategy to save the 56 DLC maps for those who wish to access them after the service shutdown. The endeavor was taken up by Gronya, a gamer who was housebound due to bowel ulcers, who opted to painstakingly secure the most pristine save file possible.

Gronya explained the extreme process undertaken via an embedded video guide. The method involved primarily using the temporary party member Kiefer, keeping the main characters inactive, to achieve a level of invulnerability that would allow the DLC Tablets to be collected. Gronya’s dedication to preserving the game’s content in the most optimal way was admired, and another user named DaniPhoFani also contributed to the effort.

Despite the regret that Nintendo did not maintain the infrastructure or design it for long-term preservation, players now have access to the diligently preserved save file, thanks to Gronya’s hard work, on the Internet Archive. This endeavor ensures that gaming enthusiasts can continue to experience this part of Dragon Quest VII’s content, whether or not Square Enix decides to port the game in the future.
