The option to alter armor cosmetics, also known as “transmog,” has been an ongoing topic since the release of Helldivers 2. However, it’s now confirmed that this feature will never be incorporated into the game. Although players can experiment with different protective gear using both earned and premium currency, a system that allows them to customize the look of their gear is not part of the game’s design.
The decision to exclude transmog in Helldivers 2 was justified by the game’s CEO, Johan Pilestedt, stating that it simply “doesn’t make sense.” The game’s equipment is designed with an appearance that visually communicates its capabilities and purpose. For instance, heavily armored gear appears durable and robust, while lightweight armor that harnesses electricity is visually interactive.
Although players will not be able to customize their armor look, they can still creatively outfit their Helldivers based on the available gear. The integrated design of Helldivers 2 is built to work regardless of the team composition, emphasizing the importance of functionality over custom cosmetics. It’s suggested that the community’s penchant for customizing their characters’ appearance might be satisfied by Arrowhead Game Studios releasing more visually appealing gear through Warbonds.
