During the fiscal year 2024, Nintendo reported selling 15.7 million Switch consoles, accordingly raising their lifetime sales up to 141.32 million units. Although this outcome fell short of the previous year, the company remains content with the figures and has boldly signalled plans to sell at least an additional 13.5 million units by March next year. This information was gleaned from a financial report issued by Nintendo on May 7th, and although sales were less compared to the previous fiscal year, this was anticipated given the console has been on the market for over seven years. In a surprising move, the company also hinted at the future, making projections for the 2025 fiscal year and announcing plans to officially unveil the next console within the next 12 months, indicating a possible release in 2025.
Nintendo’s prediction for the 2024 fiscal year had factored in the sale of 15.5 million Switch units, a target the company fairly reached. This has led them to estimate slightly lower sales for the fiscal year 2025, taking into account the console’s life and anticipation for the succeeding console, likely to be the Switch 2. Kantan Games CEO, Serkan Toto, has described the anticipated 13.5 million sales as a “very aggressive target” considering the imminent release of the new console and the natural reduction in sales for the aging device. Toto also theorised that Nintendo may be preparing to release significant new games or plan a price reduction of the Switch to meet these ambitious targets.
Currently, Nintendo has major releases scheduled for this year, including the remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, the Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD remaster, and Pokémon Legends: Z-A planned for 2025. There are unannounced titles for the latter half of 2024 that could provide a sales boost. If Nintendo manages to achieve its 13.5 million sales target, it would raise the total Switch units to around 155 million, possibly outpacing the Nintendo DS. Nonetheless, it would still trail the PlayStation 2, the best-selling video game console of all time, with around 160 million units sold.
