Legendary game designer, Ron Gilbert, known for classic titles like Monkey Island and Total Annihilation, is working on a new game. Its development, which started at the beginning of the year, is described by The Terrible Toybox as a mix of “Classic Zelda, Diablo, and Thimbleweed Park”. Elissa Black, previously co-designer and writer for Objects In Space is collaborating with Gilbert. She is also working on a 90’s style retro turn-based spaceship command game inspired by the 1971 mainframe adaptation of Star Trek.
The new game from Gilbert’s team, expected to be released in late 2024 or early 2025, is infused with various interesting elements. The game trolls through various settings such as a village with a bakery and weapon shop, reminiscent of Zelda and a city hall for dealing with both justice and paperwork. Screens hint at a day-night cycle and engaging enemies like walking skeletons, suggesting a dynamic gameplay environment.
Gilbert coins the term “bureaucracy stat” suggesting that performing paperwork could earn the player points. This adds a funny twist to the game, indicating it may have a unique approach in gameplay. The collaboration with Black on the project, according to Gilbert, increases the chances of game completion before boredom and disillusionment set in. The information for this upcoming title was shared via Mastodon and brought to light by Time Extension and Newswriter King Banana Nic Reuben.
