Sony recently retracted an interview with Naughty Dog’s Neil Druckmann. The tech giant found significant inaccuracies and errors that misrepresented Druckmann’s views on topics like animation, AI, writing, technology, and more. An apology was issued to Druckmann and decision for the interview’s removal was made in coordination with Naughty Dog and SIE.
The interview stirred controversy due to Druckmann’s comments on the potential uses of AI in game development. He appeared enthusiastic about developers using AI, with his main worry being its proper direction. The feedback wasn’t positive as critics were unhappy to see someone as influential as Druckmann disregard the concerns over AI use in game development.
Following the remark, Druckmann questioned the interview’s accuracy via a Twitter post where he mentioned some of his words, context and intent were lost during its edit. For instance, he was quoted saying Naughty Dog’s next game “could redefine mainstream perceptions of gaming.” However, Druckmann clarified he said nothing close to that. He didn’t address his comments on AI, leaving room for speculation that the interview may have misrepresented all his statements. Given the significant implications of AI for game industry workers, the community is seeking further clarification.
