The Immortalized Legend Ahri skin, the latest offering from League of Legends, has sparked controversy due to its steep price tag of around $500 for an extra tier. The skin, created to honor Faker, the inaugural inductee into Riot’s ‘League of Legends esports Hall of Fame’, or Hall of Legends, led to Ahri’s in-game ban rate spiking immediately following the skin’s release.
The skin was introduced in patch 14.12, which went live earlier this week, consequently resulting in Ahri’s ban rate jumping from approximately 8% to over 15% in ranked games, as per Lolalytics data. This increase is particularly noticeable in North America, where the ban rate rose from near 10% to over 23%, indicating either a higher level of dislike for the skin among North American players or their keenness to express their disapproval over the skin rather than focusing on progressing in the game.
The sudden increase in bans, typically seen with characters who experience significant in-game enhancements or have extremely high win rates, is unusual given Ahri’s unchanged status. This implies the changes could be attributed solely to fan reaction to the skin, which offers no actual in-game benefits. The trend of banning Ahri is expected to readjust naturally in the future, allowing League of Legends’ most significant spenders to flaunt their new skin.
