In Tuesday’s Nintendo Direct event, Nintendo unveiled Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the highly anticipated sequel in the Metroid Prime series, now set for release in 2025. The sneak peek trailer showcased action-packed gameplay featuring series protagonist Samus Aran tackling alien beasts and exploring extraterrestrial terrains. Furthermore, the trailer offered a glimpse into the game’s antagonist, a space pirate leader who possesses two Metroid creatures.

The Metroid Prime sequel, which was first announced at E3 2017, underwent development challenges involving a significant redesign and shift of the project to Retro Studios, its original developer. Throughout this period, Nintendo kept details, including gameplay footage, under wraps to prevent unnecessary fan speculation and to ensure the game was nearing its completion.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond signals the return of the classic adventure series that first emerged on Nintendo GameCube and later, the Wii with Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. While previous Metroid titles for Wii U and Wii didn’t resonate well with fans, the 2017 release of Metroid 2: Samus Returns for Nintendo 3DS and Metroid Dread for Switch in 2021, followed by Metroid Prime Remastered in early 2023, saw a revival of Samus Aran’s popular intergalactic exploits.
