WayForward announced during their Anime Expo 2024 panel that their 2005 sci-fi shoot ’em up role-playing game, Sigma Star Saga, will be re-released on modern consoles and PC in 2025. They also plan on offering a Game Boy Advance compatible version for traditionalists. The game’s return is a collaborative effort, with WayForward partnering with Bandai Namco for the release and using Limited Run Games’ Carbon Engine.

Sigma Star Saga places gamers in the role of Ian Recker, a pilot working for the Allied Earth Federation. Players experience top-down terrestrial gameplay along with horizontal shoot ’em up action while personalizing their ships with various RPG components. Working with both humans and the Krill Empire aliens, they navigate six planets in a quest to safeguard humanity.

The anticipated relaunch will include a physical edition for which WayForward promises more details in the future. Key features of the revamped game include its unique blend of top-down RPG exploration and thrilling space battles, stunning pixel-art graphics, a dynamic soundtrack, and over 70 customizable ship components. As a double agent for both humans and Krill, players traverse the richly detailed and multi-faceted narrative where even the ending isn’t set in stone.
