Hipster Whale, the developer behind the popular Frogger-style mobile game Crossy Road, is set to bring its 2020 spinoff, Crossy Road Castle, to consoles. The console version, planned for launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch in 2024, will feature both local and online multiplayer and promises over 150 collectible characters and customization items. Ahead of the launch, a public demo will be presented at BitSummit 2024 in Kyoto, Japan.
The transition to consoles will see some changes including an updated user interface (UI) tailored for each platform and the inclusion of cross-platform multiplayer. Hipster Whale is also pledging a regular schedule of content updates post-launch. These updates are expected to feature limited-time events with special levels and new character drops.
Since its initial release as an Apple Arcade exclusive in 2020, Crossy Road Castle has gained international recognition, even landing among Destructoid’s best mobile game of the year nominees. With its easy to grasp gameplay and appeal to various skill levels, the game’s expansion to new platforms will likely enable further growth and a wider audience reach.
