ATLUS and Studio Zero, the publisher and developer respectively, launched the fourth “ATLUS Exclusive” video, spotlighting Metaphor: ReFantazio’s competing characters and their supporters in the kingdom’s royal tournament. Exploring the game further than previous showcases, the video presented by director Katsura Hashino, goes in detail about the rival candidates and their followers who help them to garner public support in a unique king-election process. The ATLUS YouTube channel intends to be the place to connect for more information about Metaphor.
The premise of the game revolves around the sudden trigger of “election magic” during a royal funeral, where the citizens unexpectedly compete to be king through winning public support. The quest is further intensified by the leading national figure, Sanctifex Forden of the Sanctus Church, who instigates the “Tournament for the Throne.” Here, the contenders have to visit major cities and overcome challenges. The first among these is the “Exhibition of the Brave,” hosted by Port Brielhaven, where the candidates show their courageousness by hunting the largest monster. Batlin, a Sanctus courtier, helps in publicizing the event which has become a national spectacle, inciting public interest with his lively commentary.
Prominent figures emerge in this national campaign including Forden and the game’s protagonist’s arch-rival, Louis; both are in an infallible position to win the throne. Forden is the face of sanctism and head of the Crown Theocracy, gaining extensive support from the public in the chaos following the king’s death. Contrarily, Louis is a compelling army officer who believes in meritocracy. His superior battle and magical skills make him a powerful contender for the throne.
