Nintendo has revealed its intention to close down Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, a mobile-only version of the popular life sim, seven years after its inception in 2017. The online service will be discontinued in November 2024, making the game unplayable. However, Nintendo has also announced a silver lining: the development of a paid offline version of the app, which will allow players to transfer their saved data.

The paid version will retain the same core gameplay and controls, despite excluding certain online-dependent features, such as Market Boxes, gifts, and visiting other players’ campsites. Furthermore, the app will no longer utilize the Leaf Tickets system or any in-app purchases or subscription services. Additional details regarding pricing and release dates are slated for an October announcement.

The announcement from Nintendo sparked varied responses from the fan base, with some expressing disappointment and others anticipating the new paid version. This decision comes in the wake of Nintendo’s purported retreat from the mobile gaming market in 2020, despite the successes of the Pokémon series. As speculation continues about what’s next in-store for the Animal Crossing franchise, fans are eagerly awaiting a potential new Animal Crossing for the Switch 2.
