Bungie’s forthcoming extraction shooter, Marathon, is anticipated to have a $40 price tag as its development is too advanced to transition to a free-to-play model. The decision to maintain a premium price was influenced by the success of Helldivers 2’s identical pricing scheme, although Concord’s similar failure didn’t steer Sony away from this price point for Marathon. The game is expected to feature a traditional cosmetic and battle-pass system in addition to the initial cost, rejecting the free-to-play model barring unexpected developments.
Although major updates about Marathon will be suspended until Spring 2025, game director Joe Ziegler may release some details in order to address leaks and rumors. The introduction of a potential class or hero system, resembling Apex Legends’ characters but with added customization, became more pronounced when Ziegler took over from former director Christopher Barrett. These heroes are expected to possess exceptional abilities like double jump, fast revive, and invisibility alongside distinct personalities.
Marathon is slated to retain its puzzles and secrets, albeit in a downscaled version as they are not materializing as well as initially planned. The game will also embrace the initially revealed art direction largely due to its positive acceptance. Despite recent layoffs at Bungie, the game’s release is anticipated in 2025, albeit with reportedly dwindling morale due to staff departures and restrictions on discussions about the game.
