Nintendo Switch Online, the gaming giant’s premiere online service, has recently broadened its offering by incorporating four more classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) games into its virtual arcade. While the announcement at first glance seems exciting, a deeper look has revealed it as another attempt by Nintendo to inflate their library with limited appeal titles, optimizing quantity over quality. Particularly, the inclusion of three Super Famicom games that lack localization makes them quite challenging for non-Japanese speaking gamers to enjoy.
The quartet of new arrivals each provide distinct gameplay experiences pulled straight from the peak era of 16-bit gaming. At the forefront of the latest additions is the 1993’s fusion of two cult-classic franchises, “Battletoads Double Dragon”. In this beat-’em-up adventure, the street-smart warriors from the Double Dragon universe join forces with the wisecracking Battletoads trio for a comprehensive clash against the formidable Dark Queen and the Shadow Boss. With a variety of attacks from both sets of characters, this game packs a nostalgic punch for fans of the genre.
Also included is “Big Run”, a 1991 racing game that propels players across scenic African landscapes. Set from Tripoli to Dakar, this title is massive in scope and surprisingly challenging, requiring players not only to drive but also manage resources and staff to sustain their vehicles. This innovative blend of raw speed and strategy has the potential to charm any racing fan with a love for classic gaming.
Introducing a different genre to the mix, “Cosmo Gang the Puzzle” is a 1993 puzzle game that combines the frantic gameplay of block-dropping games with a frenetic three-mode challenge. Each mode provides a unique way to eliminate blocks, adding layers of strategy and keeping players busy with constantly altering tactical requirements. A successful mix of Cosmos and containers in the right configuration can trigger a satisfying combo that drives the scores up.
Finally, “Kunio-kun no Dodgeball da yo Zen’in Shūgō!”, a sports game that was introduced in 1993, enters the lineup. Featuring the familiar face of Kunio-kun from the River City series, players aim to conquer the world of dodgeball in a variety of stages enriched with hidden gimmicks. This game offers a chance to relive the thrill of classic sports gaming with a dose of the unexpected.
While the nostalgic value of these classic games cannot be understated, criticism arises from Nintendo’s decision to release three titles in their original, untranslated form. Navigating foreign language menus and gameplay prompts can be a daunting task for players who only speak English, diminishing their interest or enjoyment. More effort from Nintendo in localizing these games could greatly enhance their appeal and longevity among the Nintendo Switch Online subscriber base.
Even in light of these shortcomings, the additions illustrate Nintendo’s efforts to build upon their library of classic titles and offers us a lovely way of taking a stroll back to when 16-bit gaming ruled the scene. However, these games remain accessible only to the active subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online service as part of their benefits.
