In the world of gaming, Tomomi Sano may not be a name with which you’re familiar. However, this dedicated Nintendo employee has etched her name in the annals of gaming history by shattering an important barrier. Sano has taken the reins of the infamous Legend of Zelda series, making her the first woman to ever direct for the franchise. This remarkable milestone coincides with the imminent release of the upcoming game, The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom.

Our first introduction to Sano’s work comes with Nintendo’s recent “Ask the Developer” volume. Here, they delve into the details of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, shedding light on the laborious work and dedication that went into the making of the game. Sano isn’t a newbie in the gaming world. Apart from her current role in Nintendo’s Entertainment Planning and Development Department under Production Group 3, she also has an impressive portfolio collaborating with Grezzo in the development of several popular Zelda remakes. This includes the Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora’s Mask 3D, and Link’s Awakening. It’s now clear that Grezzo is the power behind the new Switch exclusive, ushering in a new era for the franchise.

The birth of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is an intriguing piece of the franchise’s history. There are hints suggesting that the concept of the game was initially akin to a Zelda Maker title, similar to the Super Mario Maker series. Nonetheless, the focus this time around seemed to be on dungeons and the endless possibilities of creation and sharing. Grezzo’s Satoshi Terada, a co-director alongside Sano, opened up about his team’s exciting prospects on the Zelda series and the different concepts they’ve been weaving.

The team experimented with many different gameplay methods. One such idea was giving Link the ability to copy and paste various objects like doors and candlesticks, promoting the creation of unique dungeons. During this developmental phase, the concept was labeled as “edit dungeon.” This enabled players to shape their Legend of Zelda gameplay in inventive ways.

Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma chimed in, exhibiting his fondness of simply copying and pasting items within the game. This playstyle influenced a significant aspect of the gameplay, diverting from the creation of dungeons and leaning more towards the use of copied items as tools for advancing the player’s own adventure.

Voicing her agreement with Aonuma, Sano noted that while crafting dungeons was definitely part of the fun, the ability to duplicate various objects and utilize them in varying settings provided an added layer of excitement. This switch in focus was compared to upending the tea table, a phrase notoriously linked to Shigeru Miyamoto.

Please be aware that an Echoes of Wisdom ROM has started circulating on the internet, creating potential spoiler threats for those eagerly awaiting the game’s release scheduled for September 26.
