In a significant announcement that had the gaming world buzzing, developer Sucker Punch confirmed that Ghost of Tsushima, one of 2020’s hit games, is set to get a sequel. This news was made official during the much-anticipated State of Play event on September 24. The successor of the critically acclaimed PS4 game, Ghost of Yōtei, is currently under development, with its highly anticipated release date set in 2025.

The sequel’s announcement trailer kept plot details scant but showcased a visually arresting landscape along with fragments of combat sequences that whet the gaming community’s appetite. From what can be gathered, players will control a new ghost called Atsu who seems to have abilities mirroring Jin from Ghost of Tsushima. She embodies the spirit of a samurai, encapsulating skills in swordsmanship and stealth that are identical, yet her arsenal includes weapons Jin wasn’t privy to.

Adding depth to Atsu’s character, gifted actor and producer Erika Ishii brings the new ghost to life. Known for her remarkable work across the gaming industry, Ishii has been the voice behind popular characters such as K in Misfits and Magic Season 2, Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Valkyrie in Apex Legends, and Dr. Wenjie Evans in Deathloop, among others.

Adding a layer of intrigue to the upcoming sequel’s story, a PlayStation blog post penned by Sucker Punch communications manager Andrew Goldfarb shed some light on the setting. Without delving into specific narrative threads, he divulged that Atsu’s journey unfolds in 1603 – more than three centuries following Ghost of Tsushima’s timeline.

Our tale locates itself in the vicinity of Mount Yōtei, a majestic peak situated in the heart of Ezo, today’s Hokkaido. This region, during 1603, was an autonomous territory, known for its vast grasslands, frigid tundras, and unforeseen risks lying in wait. This part of Japan was a stark contrast to the organized samurai clans residing in Tsushima and offers an intriguing backdrop for an original storyline we’re thrilled to narrate.

The success of Ghost of Tsushima was resounding. It ranks among Sony’s fastest-selling new games at launch and has sold upwards of eight million copies to this day. Therefore, it was only logical and predictable that a sequel would be announced sooner rather than later. The game’s Director’s Cut also made its way to PC earlier this year, introducing additional features to this already beloved title.

In an equally exciting piece of news for fans, a Ghost of Tsushima movie has come under development from director Chad Stahelski known for the immensely popular John Wick franchise. The film is being produced under the PlayStation Productions banner, a unit responsible for successful movies such as Uncharted and Gran Turismo. This production house is also the brains behind series like Twisted Metal TV and The Last of Us, not to mention other ambitious forthcoming projects like the God of War and Horizon TV shows plus a Days Gone film.

As we await more news on Ghost of Yōtei, speculation and excitement are rife amongst fans. If the success of the original game is anything to go by, this sequel is set to take the gaming community by storm when it drops in 2025.
