Fans of Blizzard, the esteemed video game company, reportedly missed out on potential Netflix adaptations of several franchise favorites, namely StarCraft, Overwatch, and Diablo. Jason Schreier, a well-known Bloomberg reporter, revealed this information while promoting his new book in a Reddit AMA session.

The cause can be traced back to a legal dispute between Blizzard and Netflix that started in early 2019. A significant event during that period saw Spencer Neumann, Blizzard’s CFO at the time, being dismissed from his position. The former CFO reportedly breached his contract to join Netflix, igniting the confrontation that would later result in years of missed opportunities for fans.

The proposed Netflix adaptations were particularly exciting news for fans, primarily for lovers of the popular game Overwatch, which seemed perfectly suited for an animated series. Overwatch has already produced numerous animated shorts that explore the backstories of its popular characters. The possibility of converting these into a large-scale series for Netflix held great promise for fans.

The StarCraft franchise was another that many fans believed could have successfully transitioned into another medium. The game’s cutscenes and promotional trailers are highly regarded in the gaming community, leading many to believe that a StarCraft adaptation might have offered something truly unique and engrossing.

Missing from Schreier’s list of potential adaptations, however, was the Warcraft franchise. The omission is interesting to note as the franchise led an unsuccessful attempt at a CGI-heavy film in 2016. Despite achieving record box office numbers for a video game film at the time, the performance and reception weren’t convincing enough to call for a sequel.

Additional juicy tidbits from Schreier’s book shed light on other projects at various stages of development within Blizzard. Another StarCraft shooter was reportedly in the works. There were also unsuccessful pitches for the fourth installment of Warcraft and even a real-time strategy game based on the famous Call of Duty series.

Blizzard continues its efforts to keep its classic franchises relevant. It is preparing for the release of Diablo 4’s expansion called Vessel of Hatred, manifesting its continued dedication to the franchise. Overwatch 2 also receives ongoing support, and the titan that is World of Warcraft remains as invincible as ever. In November, gaming fans saw the release of StarCraft: Remastered and StarCraft 2: Campaign Collection on Game Pass, signaling the company’s commitment to refreshing its cherished series.

Despite the Netflix adaptations never coming to fruition, the future of Blizzard Entertainment still shines as it remains at the forefront of gaming lore. The possibilities for adaptations in other formats are not entirely closed – the potential for new projects, collaborations, and directions for fan-favorite franchises remains. If the past is any indication, Blizzard continues to cultivate a flurry of adventures that its fan base passionately engages with, and countless gamers eagerly anticipate what comes next from this powerhouse gaming company.
