In the thriving gaming industry, unexpected changes are bound to occur, including layoffs and closures. One such event has recently transpired with Netflix where a particular gaming studio, branded as “Team Blue,” has officially been terminated, marking another eventful moment in a tough year of layoffs within gaming.
“Team Blue,” based in Southern California, was initially established to create an original AAA, a high-budget game suitable for multiple platforms. The members of this team were skilled in a variety of high-profile games, giving it a distinctive edge. The team was renowned for its talent, boasting experienced employees from an array of exceptional franchises including Overwatch, Halo, and God of War.
This original venture for Netflix’s gaming development was brought to light by a notable industry veteran, Chacko Sonny, who formerly contributed to the Overwatch franchise. About two years ago, Sonny founded the studio, marking the fifth gaming team under Netflix’s growing portfolio at the time.
In April 2023, another respected figure in the gaming sphere, Joseph Staten, formerly associated with the Halo franchise, joined forces with Sonny on the Netflix project. At that point, Staten held the role of creative director, with the objective to design a unique AAA multiplatform game, quite a formidable task considering the competitive nature of the gaming industry.
Staten’s impressive resume extends way back to when he dedicated almost a decade of his career at Microsoft, performing commendably as the head of creative on Halo Infinite. Moreover, he had a hand in the creation of the original Halo games during his tenure at Bungie, making his addition to Team Blue seem like a significant beacon of hope.
Around the same time when Staten joined the Netflix venture, Rafael Grassetti, who previously held the position of Art Director at Sony Santa Monica, joined the team. Despite the strong lineup, the studio was unable to weather the storm. Following the closure, the entire team, including Sonny and Grassetti, exited Netflix.
Prior to these upheavals, in July, Netflix vocalized its commitment to gaming, confirming that it had more than 80 games in its pipeline, albeit acknowledging that its influence in the gaming landscape was relatively modest. In an industry known for its volatility, such movements were anticipated yet unfortunate, with reports suggesting that this year alone over 10,000 jobs in the gaming industry have succumbed.
While Netflix is unquestionably a giant in streaming and production, it seems that its dive into gaming development has encountered some rough waters. Ubisoft, another major player, was forced to initiate layoffs in August. Exploration into these industry fluctuations continue as stakeholders scramble to understand why such a vibrant industry is suffering from numerous layoffs and closures.
As the reality of studio closures and layoffs continue to plague the gaming industry, vigilance and innovation will be key to survival. While the disruption at Netflix’s game development studio is undeniably concerning, it could also be a sign of exciting shift towards new horizons. As the world of video games continues to evolve, adaptability remains the principle factor for success. Despite the current somber situation, the gaming sector still has a promising future filled with countless opportunities for growth and expansion.
