The innovative gaming world was abuzz not long ago when Maschinen-Mensch, an indie development studio based in Berlin, revealed their newest gaming masterpiece, codenamed Mother Machine. Unlike their previous creations, notably the highly-praised Curious Expedition series, Mother Machine is charting a bold new direction. It’s a cooperative platformer spiced up with rogue-like elements, appealing to gamers who are excited by unpredictability and the thrill of exploration. The creation is not merely novel; it presents an audacious shift for the team. In light of this, the developers have deemed it crucial to ensure that this ground-breaking game is on par with their gamers’ expectations. As such, an open beta playtest for Mother Machine is set to take place in November.
Mother Machine portrays an intriguing plot emerging thousands of years in the future. It unravels on a distant planet formerly inhabited by humans but now devoid of human life. The humans’ departure, however, did not mean the planet was entirely bereft of their influence. The artificial intelligence (AI) they left behind gained a new purpose- creating small, playful “gremlins of chaos” using a blend of 3D printing and bioengineering. These created beings convey a simple mission – exploring their planet extensively and uncovering its secrets, undeterred by the harsh wilderness surrounding them. But the deeper they venture, the closer they come to uncovering a startling revelation – the reason for the humans’ abrupt departure and the hidden truths of their AI ‘mother.’
However, these mysterious gremlins, while skilled explorers, were not designed for survival. This premise introduces the rogue-like elements of the game, where every gremlins’ death results in the AI birthing another, destined to navigate unpredictable, procedurally-generated levels just like its predecessor. Surprisingly, survival is not impossible. The gremlins have the capacity to adapt and evolve, displaying mutation capabilities that enhance their abilities – adding a role-playing touch to the game. Teaming up for adventures also incites survival – thanks to online play that allows up to four gamers to overcome obstacles together or enjoy some fun mayhem. Indeed, Mother Machine has mastered the skill of incorporating amusement with adventure, as evidenced by the ‘chaos’ gremlins’ unique skills such as belching and flatulence.
A key purpose of the upcoming playtest is to verify the functionality of the game’s features and to evaluate its cooperative gameplay component. This invites more players to join in – the higher the number, the better the results. Additionally, this playtest introduces upgrades from its predecessors, including superior visuals and audio, and mouse and keyboard support.
Eager gamers can try out the open beta of Mother Machine by visiting the game’s Steam page from November 22 to November 25. However, if patience is your virtue and you prefer to wait for the complete package, rest assured that Mother Machine is set to debut in its full glory in the first quarter of the next year on PC. Only then will we discover how well these engineered ‘gremlins’ fare.
