The world of gaming was offered a glimpse into a much-anticipated yet never-revealed Warhammer Role-Playing Game (RPG) that, through diagnostic accounts, seems to have been cancelled before its launch. The two behemoths behind its creation, Games Workshop and Nexon, have left gamers worldwide curious with lingering, what-could-have-been thoughts.

The concept of a new Warhammer RPG was whispered about in circles from early January, as rumors of its development began hitting the industry. It was reported that Thought Pennies – an up-and-coming gaming studio – was the creative force behind the project. Further adding to the intrigue was the fittingly cryptic description of the now-cancelled game being a third-person action-RPG with an immersive multiplayer component. Players were all set to dive into the captivating live-service multiplayer interactions, but it seems fate had other plans.

The tidbits from the rumor mill didn’t stop there. Continuing to down the rabbit hole of speculation, more fascinating information about the fictional project surfaced. Namely, the Warhammer RPG from Thought Pennies was set to be based within the unique universe of Warhammer Age of Sigmar, a tabletop RPG. The Age of Sigmar realm, a stand-out fantasy alternative to the better-known Warhammer 40,000, boasted of a captivating realm ready to satiate the cravings of hungry RPG fans and Warhammer enthusiasts alike.

Deepening the element of surprise in this unseen saga, it was revealed that industry titan Nexon was entwined in this mysterious collaboration. In an earlier revelation around 2021, both Nexon and Games Workshop had hinted at such a game. The cryptic message outlined a “new Virtual World featuring a socially interactive player-versus-environment world, with Nexon’s top-rated Live Operations continually providing engaging new content and service.” Clearly, this was slated to be a game-changer.

The one-that-might-have-been Warhammer title, based on the Age of Sigmar world, was reportedly planned to have players take on the role of war hosts for the God-king Sigmar and his allies. The objective was an enticing one – to bring back order to the realms. Adding to the allure, this creation was due to be released across various platforms – PC, consoles, and mobile. However, according to a statement from Thought Pennies, a strategic change from Nexon led to the termination of the project. Despite the disappointment, Thought Pennies still expressed their gratitude for Nexon’s valued contributions.

Despite the cancellation of this Age of Sigmar-based game, passionate gamers and Warhammer enthusiasts need not despair. Other games rooted in the imaginative world of the tabletop RPG exist, and there are many exciting adventures to embark upon.’ Realms of Ruin’ is one such example – a real-time strategy game from the prolific Frontier Developments studio. ‘Storm Ground’ is another tantalizing option, a turn-based strategy roguelike from Focus Entertainment. While the once-hyped new game will never see the light of day, these other gripping alternatives can provide endless joys to eager gamers.

It’s undeniable that the allure and potential of the cancelled Warhammer RPG project will continue to live on in the imaginations of game lovers worldwide. Though shrouded in mystery, it serves as a poignant reminder of the passion and dynamism inherently present within the multifaceted world of gaming.
