Mountaintop Announces End of Spectre Divide Service in 30 Days

Spectre Divide, a game that created considerable anticipation at launch, first went live for the PC via Steam on September 3, 2024. Subsequently, it made its entry into PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series platforms on February 25, 2025, coinciding with the onset of the game’s premiere season. However, sadly, this multi-platform adventure game didn’t garner the thriving success its creators had anticipated.

Addressing the gaming community, Nate Mitchell, CEO and co-founder of Mountaintop, cast a spotlight on the game’s performance since its launch. He conveyed his sentiments on the instability of the revenues and player participation and the ultimate decision to shut down operations. The paramount goal of keeping both the game Spectre Divide and the Mountaintop studio operational had fallen short.

In the initial week, the studio saw some ray of hope. About 400,000 players joined the game universe, creating a peak concurrent player count of nearly 10,000 across all the active platforms. Nevertheless, the months that pursued didn’t echo the anticipated trajectory. The number of active players and the game-related income didn’t keep up, failing to cover the everyday costs of the game’s sustenance and studio operation.

Following the launch on PC, the team at Mountaintop made a commendable effort to extend their remaining capital. However, the limitations were met sooner than expected, making it impossible to any longer support the game development financially. The result of this financial plight has led to Mountaintop closing down at the end of the week.

These circumstances have thrust the game into a period of transition, leading to Spectre Divide going offline in 30 days post this announcement. Meanwhile, the team has decided to refrain from new in-game purchases and reimburse the money spent post the Season 1 launch, using the respective platforms. Unfortunately, all efforts to rescue the situation, be it finding a publisher, securing additional investments, or seeking out an acquisition, couldn’t turn the tide in favor of the game. The gaming industry is currently grappling with numerous challenges, and while delivering this news is heart-wrenching, it’s the unfortunate reality.

The Mountaintop team held an exceptional level of love for Spectre Divide, and their pride in what they had built with the gaming community is irrefutable. They endeavored to establish something unique in the crowded gaming genre, bringing together a commendably talented indie team from around the globe to create a game they held faith in.

The team’s aspiration was to innovate, to shape a fresh artistic universe, unite friends around memorable moments and their passion led them to partner with their heroes. But they also knew that they were treading an uphill path. Despite the uncertainties, the team embarked on this journey.

Although they stumbled in September when they launched, the team rallied to address feedback for Season 1, implementing substantial changes across the game and preparing ground for console versions. This commitment shines through, despite financial hurdles.

The gaming industry is fraught with unexpected twists. The landscape has evolved enormously since Mountaintop initiated the project in 2020. Even though Spectre Divide couldn’t hit the mark this time around, the team’s indomitable spirit remained undeterred. They signed off, sending a heartfelt thank you to their community and promising to cherish this journey forever.
