For those new to Dragon Quest or unfamiliar with the series’ intricate history, it’s interesting to note that Square Enix, the powerhouse game developer behind the title, arranged the release sequence in an unconventional manner. This might be baffling to gamers who, like me, are just dipping their toes into the vast world of Dragon Quest.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake caught my attention last year despite the fact that I hadn’t previously experienced a Dragon Quest game. I initially found the concept perplexing; after all, playing a prequel before understanding the story’s origins seemed a daunting and irregular method of entry into the world of Dragon Quest. However, I soon understood the strategic maneuver by Square Enix. Having already released the third game in November last year and the decision to put out a simultaneous reboot of the first two games, it was clear a broader narrative was being put in place.

For those unfamiliar with the genre, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake shook up the traditional release order of the beloved series. Instead of sequentially releasing the remakes, they stirred the order and kicked things off with the third installment of the saga, only to loop back to the beginning of the story.

In a surprising twist, the renowned game developer recently announced the release date for the double remake of the initial two games, which was initially slated for arrival in 2025. The newly revealed release date for the remake package is October 30th, a joyous piece of news for gamers who were anxiously awaiting the opportunity to delve into the early Dragon Quest experiences.

While the first two Dragon Quests are currently playable on up-to-date platforms like the Nintendo Switch and mobile devices, there haven’t been authorized versions accessible on personal computers until now. The remakes’ imminent release means that soon, players like myself, who have been primarily gaming on the computer, will finally get the chance to experience these classic titles on our preferred platform.

Even though I haven’t embarked on the journey with Dragon Quest yet, I’ve heard from others that the games aren’t particularly lengthy. Hence, with the first two games being bundled together, it seems like an efficient way to tackle the series – one that I’m looking forward to diving into.

But make no mistake! While these remakes offer a new chance for beginners like me to dip into the world of Dragon Quest, it’s important to remind ourselves that this shouldn’t be considered the definitive way to experience these classics. As a player who often finds the rough edges of RPGs slightly less enticing, I am nonetheless excited about the remakes’ potential modern conveniences. However, I am perfectly happy to leave the hard-core min-maxing to the more fanatical followers of the series.

In addition to the individual releases, Square Enix also announced an exclusive package aptly named the “Erdrick Trilogy”, which will combine all three of the remakes for those who have so far missed out on the third installment. As an exciting bonus, full trilogy owners will receive a dog suit for Dragon Quest 1 and a cat suit for Dragon Quest 2. A delightful touch of whimsy I am looking forward to seeing in action. Get ready to mark your calendars and embark on this time-honored journey come October 30th.
