Hellena Taylor, widely known as the voice of the character Bayonetta in PlatinumGames’ Japanese action franchise, stirred up the internet three years back with a series of contentious social media posts. Taylor’s role in the Bayonetta series was long-standing, so her replacement for Bayonetta 3 over alleged pay discrepancies caused quite a sensation. This then ignited the notorious voice acting scandal. Recently, Hideki Kamiya, the director of the original Bayonetta and supervisor of the sequel, addressed this situation in a YouTube video, sporting a pair of tiny glasses and a wolf-adorned t-shirt. He shared his experiences and opinions related to the incident, which was an exhaustive retelling of events. A series of spiteful social media posts targeting Kamiya were highlighted in the video after Taylor rallied the game’s fanbase against the PlatinumGames developers. Demeaning posts flooded Kamiya’s timeline to such an extent that he could barely cope with the onslaught despite his well-known blocking abilities. The underlying cause of this entire debacle was Taylor’s contention that she was offered a mere $4,000 as payment for reprising her voice acting role in Bayonetta 3. For her, this figure greatly undervalued her contributions. Eventually, celebrated voice actor Jennifer Hale took on the role of Bayonetta. An ensuing report refuted Taylor’s claim, stating PlatinumGames did their utmost to encourage her return, offering a significantly higher pay than what Taylor was propagating on social media. Taylor contested the factualness of this report at the time. Kamiya felt that initial reports had conveniently overlooked vital details, skewing the narrative to undersell what had occurred between the involved parties. This biased reporting, he believed, stoked anger against him in the audience. Once the uproar subsided, Kamiya noticed that several of those initial scornful posts aimed at him were removed. He demanded an apology before retractions, sharing his personal conflict management policy of admitting to being in the wrong when so and accordingly apologizing. He expected others to accord him the same respect. Kamiya also took issue with the perceived cowardice displayed by the post deletions. He went on to discuss various subjects in his 12-minute video. One key aggravator in the uproar was the industry-wide concern over the treatment of voice actors. Many iconic roles have been recast without original voice actors in recent years, causing substantial distress among the acting niche. Voice actors argue that this move allows the companies to pay less for nascent talent, while gaming firms counter that a series refresh can be facilitated with new voices. This discord has previously resulted in a year-long strike where voice actors appealed for improved pay and protection against AI.
