Rod Fergusson, famed as a ‘closer’ in gaming circles, had been instrumental in steering the Diablo franchise to soaring heights. Now that his journey with Diablo comes to a conclusion, the gaming world is abuzz with thoughts of what his future role might be.

Fergusson, the celebrated General Manager of Blizzard Entertainment for the Diablo franchise, announced his departure after a fruitful five-year journey. The news of his departure from Blizzard carried an air of friendly parting, sparking curiosity about his future predominance in game development. In a heartfelt farewell note shared on social media, Fergusson articulated his experience, “Following five years of nurturing the Diablo franchise with four notable releases, the time has arrived for me to move on from Blizzard/Microsoft. I step into the future, sword in hand, eager to see what it has in store.” His words echoed a sense of triumphant pride over the projects he has helmed, and a steely resolve to forge ahead with new ventures.

With Fergusson at the wheel, Blizzard saw the launch of four colossal titles: Diablo 2 Resurrected, Diablo Immortal, Diablo 4, and D4 expansion Vessel of Hatred. After becoming a part of Blizzard in 2020, succeeding his tenure at The Coalition, Fergusson was instrumental in steering Gears 5 to success. He carved out a niche for himself in game development, praised as a ‘closer’ capable of bringing grinding projects to a successful finish. This became unequivocally identifiable in the stretched development cycle of Diablo 4. The game, which had already seen several revisions over nearly a decade, finally crossed the finish line under Fergusson’s watchful eye in 2023.

Prior to transforming Blizzard’s Diablo franchise, Fergusson lent his expertise to beloved games as Gears of War and the subsequent sequels, BioShock Infinite, and more. His knack for tackling floundering projects and spinning them into gold has created a sense of anticipation about his next move. There are plenty of games in development that are mired in challenges and indefinite delays that could significantly benefit from Fergusson’s touch. Some potential future projects could include Bungie’s Marathon, Studio Wildcard’s Ark 2, Cloud Chamber Games’ brand new BioShock, and Judas by Ghost Story Games, to name a few.

Over the years, Fergusson imbibed the corporate motto of ‘always be closing’. Although with his departure from Blizzard, fans of struggling games-in-progress can only hope that Fergusson might consider lending a hand in shoring them up to successful release. Regardless of where Fergusson lands next, one thing is certain – the world of game development eagerly awaits the next project he will command.
