Halo Creator Upset Over Battlefield 6 Recognition Controversy

Marcus Lehto, co-creator of the famous Halo series, recently expressed his disappointment over the inadequate recognition of former staff members from Ridgeline Games, a studio he co-established, in the credits of Battlefield 6. Although these individuals played a significant role in building the game’s ‘foundation’, they were, in Lehto’s view, insufficiently acknowledged.

Ridgeline Games, which shuttered in February 2024 following a broader restructuring within EA, was originally responsible for the narrative campaign’s development in Battlefield 6. Despite EA laying off around 670 employees and moving away from future licensed IPs, the company continued to work on the single-player campaign of Battlefield 6, which had been initiated by Ridgeline Games.

Upon the record-breaking launch of Battlefield 6, Lehto used LinkedIn to commend his former colleagues’ work on the game. Many of them, he claimed, had been denied adequate credits in the official release. He also expressed his disappointment that he, along with several others, were not included in the credits.

Lehto particularly highlighted how the laid off employees’ considerable efforts had reduced to the ‘Special Thanks’ section usually reserved for the end credits. He intended to properly acknowledge his former colleagues, specifying their roles and how he would prefer them to be recognized in the credits. This acknowledgment, he believes, is crucial because game development is a team effort, warranting fair recognition for all contributors.

Lehto, a veteran of Bungie celebrated for his creative work on Halo: Reach, joined EA following criticism over Battlefield 2042’s lack of a single-player narrative campaign. His departure from EA was cited as a ‘personal decision’. EA Entertainment president Laura Miele, addressing Ridgeline’s closure, announced that Danny Isaac and Darren White would be taking over the work on Battlefield’s narrative campaign. Some members from Ridgeline Games also joined Ripple Effect to work on Battlefield.

EA subsequently announced Battlefield Studios, comprising four developers, including DICE, Ripple Effect, Motive, and Criterion, to continue work on Battlefield franchise. Despite Battlefield 6’s exceptional sales success and its lauded multiplayer, the campaign fell short of expectation.
