In a remarkable development, the release of the online multiplayer game, Halo: Campaign Evolved, for PlayStation 5 (PS5), Xbox Series X|S, and PC has caused GameStop to announce the termination of the long-running Console Wars. Known for its impartiality in the gaming world, GameStop used the forthcoming launch as an excuse to end the enduring rivalry between gaming systems.
The saga of the Console Wars, which GameStop humorously describes as an incessant and growingly trivial feud, can be tracked back to 2001 with the launch of Halo: Combat Evolved, which was then an Xbox-only title. Microsoft recently revealed that a revamped version of the game, Halo: Campaign Evolved, is set to debut on PS5 in 2026, prompting GameStop to officially close the chapter on the iconic console wars.
As stated by GameStop, ‘All claims to exclusivity are hereby dissolved. Console loyalists are instructed to cease hostilities, disband militias, and enjoy this new era of gaming.’ Notably, the release of Halo: Campaign Evolved does not signify an absolute end to console exclusivity, as represented by GameStop, but it indeed marks a significant shift from exclusivity by Xbox.
In the past, Xbox has made some of its other key exclusive franchises available to PlayStation, including Gears of War and Forza Horizon 5. Halo, however, has been a flagship franchise for Xbox. Going forward, these games will be available on PlayStation.
Xbox executive Matt Booty revealed that Xbox strives to reach the players irrespective of the platform, even if it translates into releasing games on competing consoles. The strategy has proven to be successful for Xbox, with its previously recognized exclusive franchises noticing robust sales on PlayStation.
