In the gaming industry, Nintendo is known for its spontaneity, often releasing updates and new content to its games with little to no forewarning. This trend continued as Nintendo surprise launched an update for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD on its Switch 2 console.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD received additional content and Switch 2-exclusive enhancements as part of the new update, which was available on Tuesday. The update added a new playable character, Dixie Kong, who also features in Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Players can swap Diddy Kong for Dixie, either as Donkey Kong’s assistant or as a second player in co-op mode. Dixie possesses the ability to aid Donkey Kong in achieving higher jumps. The update also introduced Turbo Attack, a new feature that allows players to rush through accelerated versions of levels.
The update is accessible on both the original Switch and the newer Switch 2. However, the latter offers unique hardware-related upgrades. The Switch 2 version promises improved resolution, higher definition graphics, and reduced loading times, as per Nintendo. Additionally, it supports GameShare, empowering two players to share a single game copy.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD debuted on the Switch in 2025, serving as an upgraded version of the original 2010 Wii release, Donkey Kong Country Returns. In fact, the game was also launched for Nintendo’s 3DS platform in 2013. With the HD version, the game presents a solid — though perhaps not the premier — primate-swinging experience on the Switch. The 1990s Super Nintendo trilogy and the ported Tropical Freeze of 2018 are considered richer experiences in terms of characters and creativity. Nevertheless, fans and followers of 2D platforming will derive enjoyment from the 80 or so levels and multitude of collectibles provided in Returns HD.
The HD version accommodates beginners with a ‘Modern Mode’, equipable items, and Super Kong. Thus, Returns HD presents itself as the most user-friendly entry for new and beginner players in the Donkey Kong Country series so far. The latest version, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD ver. 1.1.0, is currently available as a complimentary update.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a solid game — it’s just far from the best primate platforming experience on the Switch. The original Super Nintendo trilogy remains timeless (yes, even the one with Kiddy Kong), and 2018’s port of Tropical Freeze is both thematically and creatively superior, with an entire cast of Kongs along for the ride. That being said, fans of 2D platforming will still find plenty to love in Returns HD’s 80-plus levels and oodles of collectibles. And with plenty of padding for newcomers in the form of Modern Mode, equippable items, and Super Kong, Returns HD is easily the most accessible entry in the Donkey Kong Country lineup to date.
