The renowned game developers Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja recently broke the news that their latest release, Nioh 3, has exceeded 1 million copies sold worldwide. This feat makes Nioh 3 the quickest in the franchise’s history to achieve such a milestone. The game was released worldwide for PlayStation 5 and PC (Steam) on February 6. The Nioh franchise in totality has now crossed the threshold of 10 million copies sold, an impressive increase from 8 million in May 2025.
The rising popularity stimulated the developers to release an accolade trailer, allowing fans a glimpse into the media’s reception to Nioh 3. The game, described as a new dark samurai action RPG, has been met with overwhelming success, particularly on PlayStation 5 and Windows PC via Steam. Set in Japan’s prosperous Edo period, Nioh 3 plunges players into an epic narrative about sibling rivalry, dark forces, and the struggle for power.

Kunimatsu’s desire to overthrow his brother incites a wave of yokai, abruptly erupting the peaceful era and casting Japan into chaos. Using the enigmatic prowess of their Guardian Spirit Kusanagi, Takechiyo transcends time to salvage his homeland and secure the title of shogun.
The narrative of Nioh 3 is expansive, spanning over several eras and regions such as Edo Castle, Totomi during the Warring States period, Heian period’s capital city of Kyoto, and for the first time in the series, the Bakumatsu period. The beautiful and diverse landscapes of each era form a vast open field for players to explore freely.
Nioh 3 provides players with two distinct combat styles, Samurai and Ninja, allowing them to toggle freely during combat. Equipped with a new Arts Proficiency system and a Deflect mechanic for last-moment blocks, the Samurai Style provides a grounded combat experience. On the other hand, the Ninja Style offers agility and speed, allowing players to perform an array of swift aerial attacks and Ninjutsu techniques while eluding enemy strikes. The game is available for purchase in multiple editions, each providing unique in-game items, bonuses, and access to future DLCs.
