Eager enthusiasts of the classic RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 1, Baldur’s Gate 2, Icewind Dale, and the BG expansion Siege of Dragonspear, brace yourselves! The first update since 2021, patch 2.7, is now being tested in Steam beta. This is a significant moment, especially marking the first update since the 2.6 patch, and an even longer wait for iOS players who have been anticipating such since the 2.5 patch. The developers, Beamdog, conveyed their sincere apologies for the delay in their announcement. As we gear up for 2026 – a monumental 14 years since Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition (BG:EE) first graced PC screens – the team expressed their gratitude to dedicated followers for the patience and support on this ride.

The team at Beamdog is fully aware of the age of these Infinity Engine games. The main emphasis in the current stage of their lifespan is on ensuring the games continue to run seamlessly as hardware continues to evolve. A secondary consideration is making much-needed enhancements. With these objectives, patch 2.7 introduces adequate Steam cloud saving. It makes save control possible through the Steam interface, instead of relying on in-game options menus. Further, there is the addition of native support for Apple Silicon Macs.

Looking ahead, Beamdog’s development of dynamic language support aims to simplify future additions of new translations. This feature intends to bypass the need for a full patch on most store fronts, enabling the implementation of new languages on an ad hoc basis. With this patch, community-created translations in Brazilian Portuguese, Czech, and Ukrainian are added to Baldur’s Gate 2. Also, Hungarian and Japanese have been added to Icewind Dale.

To access these additions immediately, users should opt into the Steam beta. Beamdog has confirmed that the patch will be accessible to the GOG versions of the games upon the full release. They also provide some guidance to players who rely heavily on mods – copying and pasting the entire game folder for backup. As it’s beta phase for now, players are reassured that there’s ample time to do this preserving activity. This precautionary action will create a safety net so that post-live updates, players are still able to run 2.6 with all their mods.

Those who are inspired to revisit these classic RPGs, or those who are considering delving in for the first time may find this update intriguing. Do explore this new venture into the realms of the classics with the fresh update.
