PS5 Update Adds Pro Visuals And Chat Tools

Sony has released a new PS5 system software update, and this one does more than deliver the usual background stability fixes. Version 26.06-14.00.00 introduces a handful of meaningful additions, including a visual upgrade for PS5 Pro users, improved voice chat functionality, and new Welcome Hub widgets designed to make it easier to spot popular multiplayer games and fresh releases. While not a complete overhaul of the console experience, it is a practical update that adds useful quality-of-life improvements across several areas of the system.

The biggest feature in this update is aimed at PS5 Pro owners. Sony has enabled Enhance PSSR Image Quality by default after installing the new firmware. PSSR, short for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, is Sony’s upscaling technology built to improve image clarity and smoothness in supported games. With this setting now switched on automatically, PS5 Pro users can benefit from sharper visuals without needing to dig through menus first. Sony also says the enhanced version works even with games that were built to support the earlier implementation of PSSR, which should help a wider range of titles look better on the upgraded hardware.

For players who prefer to manage every detail themselves, the setting can still be disabled manually. If needed, users can head to Settings, then Screen and Video, then Video Output, and turn off Enhance PSSR Image Quality. That flexibility is important, especially for players who like to compare performance and image settings on their own. Still, making the feature the default option signals that Sony is confident in the benefits it brings to the PS5 Pro experience.

Another notable addition focuses on social features. Voice chat now includes a way to see who is currently speaking during a conversation. This may sound simple, but it can make a big difference in busy multiplayer sessions, especially when several people are talking at once. Being able to identify the active speaker helps groups coordinate more easily, reduces confusion, and makes party chat feel more organized.

To enable the speaker indicator, users need to open the voice chat card in the Control Center, select More, then choose Display Who’s Speaking and turn on Display Names. There is also an option to decide where the speaker indicator appears on the screen. That extra customization should help players place the display somewhere visible without blocking important gameplay information.

Sony has also expanded the Welcome Hub with a new Community Activity widget. This feature is built around discovery and gives players a quick snapshot of what is currently popular. The widget includes two views. Trending Now highlights ten multiplayer games or multiplayer modes that are gaining momentum, which can help players notice new releases or major updates that are drawing attention. The Top 10 view shows the most popular games from the last week in a player’s country or region, offering a simple way to find active communities and games with strong player counts.

These additions may not sound as flashy as a major dashboard redesign, but they fit well with how many players use their consoles today. Multiplayer communities shift quickly, and having a built-in way to see what is hot right now could help users jump into active games faster. It also gives the PS5 interface a more dynamic feel by surfacing current trends instead of leaving discovery entirely to the PlayStation Store.

The update also includes changes to Bluetooth-related features for PS5 and PS5 Pro consoles in certain countries or regions. Sony notes that if users go into Settings, then Accessories, then General, then Advanced Settings and choose Turn Off Bluetooth, the console will not enter rest mode and HDMI Device Link will not function. According to Sony, this option is intended for managing controller connections in esports venues and similar environments, rather than for everyday home use. In other words, most players probably will not need to touch this setting unless they have a very specific use case.

As expected, the firmware also delivers broader system software performance and stability improvements. These routine fixes are often the least exciting part of any update, but they remain important. Even when patch notes are brief, small stability improvements can help the console run more smoothly, reduce minor bugs, and improve the overall user experience over time.

Taken together, version 26.06-14.00.00 is a solid PS5 update that offers more than the standard maintenance patch. PS5 Pro users get an immediate visual boost through enhanced PSSR defaults, social players gain a clearer voice chat interface, and everyone benefits from new Welcome Hub tools that make multiplayer discovery easier. It is not a revolutionary firmware release, but it is a thoughtful one, and it shows Sony continuing to refine the PlayStation 5 experience in practical ways.
