My Christmas vacation this year was mostly spent running around trying to spend as much time with different family members and friends as possible. When I wasn’t doing that I was trying to finally finish Persona 3. My game has over 100 hours logged on it (granted, I would say at least 10 hours of that is from me pausing the gaming and going to do something else, I left it on one day for some reason) and I’m into the last month of the game with all the mini bosses cleared. I think I started the vacation at 80 hours, so that’s a pretty good amount of time put in over 8 days. I really was aiming to finish Persona 3 because there are a lot of new games to try to finish now…
- I now have The Orange Box. I played Half-Life 2 awhile ago on the PC and I honestly think it’s my favorite single player FPS to date, so I don’t know why I didn’t pick up the game sooner. The Orange Box, from the little I’ve played of it, would be my personal game of the year. I mostly played Portal and it is amazing, I can’t say enough about it. I really like the subtle background music, the computer voice talking to you and promising you cake (the cake is a lie) if you solve the puzzles, the little details that are included along the way…it’s just amazing and shows how polished Portal really is. My dad made me watch this movie one time called Cube or The Cube, I can’t remember which, and it kind of sort of reminds me of that, but in a totally different way. I don’t even know why I felt the need to include that thought, because I think like 10 people saw that movie. I also briefly played Team Fortress 2 and it was extremely fun. If Episode 1 and Episode 2 are anything like the original Half-Life 2 I’m going to be in heaven.
- I received a Wii for Christmas and played a small amount of Super Mario Galaxy (up to the end of the second galaxy). Now, I didn’t like Super Mario Sunshine that much, so I didn’t know what to expect going into it. Sure, I knew it got amazing reviews, but I figured it was going to just be another Mario game. In a sense I guess it is…but way more awesome. The whole “galaxy” concept is pretty innovative and it works extremely well with the Mario formula. I really like some of the music on certain stages, too. Everything about it seems very well done and will easily be one of my top games of ’08 (or is it ’07, the game came out in 2007 but I’m not going to complete it until sometime 2008, so I don’t know where to count it). I also want to retract my “They look the same to me” post, they don’t, Galaxy looks better to me, I was totally wrong.
- I got to play a lot of Guitar Hero III and finally realized it’s totally radical. I don’t know why I brushed it off before but after seriously playing it I’m addicted. I later received the game for my birthday, so that’s another one to add to the list.
I also received some older games that I had always wanted or had owned at one time and foolishly sold them. Most notably Cubivore, Ikaruga, and Castlevania Chronicles. Then there’s Link’s Crossbow (I know it’s short, but I love going back to try to get better scores), Harvest Moon for the Gamecube, Paper Mario…I’m totally pumped. I’d be playing something right now, but there are two people sleeping on the futon that I don’t really know. I think one of them is an astrophysicist.
