“The Day Before”, previously Steam’s top wishlisted game, will terminate its servers in a month following multiple delays, allegations of being a scam, legal disputes, and a disastrous Early Access release. Initially launched by developers Fntastic in 2021, the game was set in an open-world MMO, brimming with zombies and features of community-building and looter-shooters. Despite several delays and temporary removal from Steam, it rapidly climbed the top of Steam’s most-wished rankings but soon earned negative reviews due to poor quality gameplay and a tendency to resemble extraction shooters rather than MMOs.

Following heavy criticism and claims of scamming, Fntastic announced a halt in development due to insufficient funds, although servers remained operational for an unspecified duration. On January 22nd, 2024, The Day Before’s servers will officially close permanently, rendering the game unplayable. The announcement came barely two months after its launch date.

Mytona, the game’s publishers, stated that every player who purchased the game on Steam would receive a refund. Due to the absence of a development team, the project inevitably had to shut down. The steep fall of “The Day Before”, from awaited release to disheartening flop, presents a lamentable story of high aspirations derailed. With the reassurance of player refunds, it denotes a lesson about the potential repercussions of over-ambition in game development.
