Sony is facing backlash from players three months after the launch of Helldivers 2 due to the need to link Steam and PlayStation accounts, a move that was always planned, but temporarily halted due to technical issues at launch time. According to Sony, account linkage is vital for player safety and security, as it can protect against harassment and enable the banning and appeal processes for penalized users. However, the sudden enforcement of this rule has upset many PC users who don’t own a PlayStation console and won’t use the account for anything else, and in some cases, cannot create accounts due to regional restrictions.

An increasing number of players are expressing their dissatisfaction on social media and pledging to quit the game entirely. In particular, the restriction frustrates those in regions where PlayStation accounts are not available, as they would be unable to play, and using VPN circumvention could lead to a ban. Such issues are creating uncertainty regarding the game’s continued popularity.

Sony has acknowledged the inconvenience for a section of its users, intensifying the need for an alternative solution. Without an appropriate response that allows all players to access Helldivers 2, Sony risks alienating a substantial portion of its audience and triggering a drop-off in player participation.
