Helldivers 2, published by Sony, has broken records with more than 12 million units sold across PlayStation 5 and PC. This makes it the fastest-selling PlayStation launch of all time, with an average of a million copies sold weekly since its launch on February 8th. These encouraging statistic were shared during a webcast discussing Sony’s financial results up to March 2024.
What sets Helldivers 2 apart from other hit games, such as Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök, is its accessibility and affordable price. Launching on both PS5 and PC on the same day enabled a larger audience reach, and the game’s dedicated community and strong social media presence have attracted new players. Furthermore, the game’s price of $40, compared to Spider-Man 2 and God of War Ragnarök’s $70, made it more affordable for many customers.
Despite some initial troubles with PlayStation account requirements that threatened the game’s popularity in some countries, Sony ultimately managed to prevent any negative impact. Looking ahead, Sony likely will exercise caution in managing the future of Helldivers 2, considering its current success and the potential harm any hasty decisions could cause.
