Square Enix has unveiled a 3D remake of a classic Super Famicom RPG, Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven. Developed by the team responsible for Trials of Mana, the launch is slated for October 24, 2024, on platforms including PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. The remade version will come with original and rearranged musical scores by composer Kenji Ito, Japanese and English voiceovers, novel game mechanics, and a timeline combat system alongside other captivating features.

The action of Romancing SaGa 2: Revenge of the Seven unfolds in the Varennes Empire, steeped in ancient prophecy about seven heroes destined to save the kingdom. The plot thickens when Kzinssie, one of the heroes, attacks the empire’s capital resulting in a multi-generational war as power passes from Emperor Leon to his son Gerard via inheritance magic, following the demise of Prince Victor. The game’s unique inheritance system allows any character to become Emperor through succession mechanics, which can be automatic or player-chosen whenever an Emperor’s life reaches zero, a new era begins, or the player’s party is annihilated.

Player-contact-dependent combat occurs with a display of turn order on a timeline and enemy vulnerabilities to various weapons and spells. Character knockout leads to life points reduction and a character may die when all life points are depleted. Previously evaded character abilities can then be auto-evaded in subsequent combats. Difficulty options range from casual to hard (classic), mirroring the original launch. Game progression depends on player choices impacting the game’s storyline and outcomes in different regions, which can be visited in any order. Additionally, players can research and construct facilities within their capital city.
