Microsoft has reportedly disbanded a key Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) team, leading to multiple staff layoffs. The company’s decision to eliminate the team was revealed in an internal email sent by the now-former team leader, who also accused the tech giant of “harassment and toxicity.” This move comes as Microsoft and other major tech firms like Meta and Google reevaluate their previously established DEI programs, likely in response to significant societal events such as the Black Lives Matter protests of 2020 and potential political policies like Project 2025.

According to the leaked email, it appears that DEI programs across various businesses face the threat of downsizing or outright shutdown. The message suggests that many companies are reconsidering their inclusion commitments, originally established after the murder of George Floyd, especially if continuing such efforts could potentially jeopardize their U.S. federal contracts.

The email also heaped praise on the disbanded team, describing its members as “brilliant, ethical, and world-class strategists” dedicated to making a positive impact. It further alleged that Microsoft’s leadership had been involved in “investigated and evidenced discrimination, harassment, and toxicity.” The company has been contacted for a statement but has yet to respond.
