Humble Games, the publishing division of Humble Bundle owned by Ziff Davis via IGN Entertainment, is reported to be implementing layoffs amid a company restructuring. Humble Games’ business developer, Nicola Kwan, took to LinkedIn to confirm 36 employees were let go, indicating possible shutdowns within the company. Nonetheless, in a statement to GamesIndustry.biz, the company affirmed the move was a necessary restructuring due to the challenging economic environment, with the aim of ensuring the stability and support of their developers and ongoing projects, also emphasizing it wouldn’t affect operations at Humble Bundle.
The notion of “restructuring” often suggests significant layoffs, but IGN Entertainment seemingly plans to continue operating the company somehow. Humble Games pledged their support for the developers under their brand, hinting at a probable business continuation. Despite this assurance, developers of games published by the company seemed uninformed of these developments. Queries have arisen regarding the fate of their games, similar to the issues faced by titles under the closed label, Adult Swim Games, which struggled with delisting earlier this year.
Uncertainty surrounds Humble Games’ future as the recent statement failed to answer several questions. These layoffs are, however, part of industry-wide job cuts that show no sign of abating. Embellishing this reality, “Who’s gonna keep the store pages up? We don’t know yet.”, are the words left by Tiana Pixel of Studio Pixel Punk on Twitter.
