Square Enix has declared the closure of its free-to-play mobile RPG, Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius, effective October 30, 2024. Initially launched more than eight years ago, this decision, however, won’t affect the Japanese version of the game. The game creators issued an apology to the players, mentioning it was a challenging decision due to maintenance difficulties of the app experience, without giving a specific underlying reason.
All in-game microtransactions were halted on August 29, 2024, including for resource bundles and the premium Lapis currency. Until the closure date, the game will operate as usual, incorporating scheduled events, post which, the app will go offline and player accounts will be removed. The game, launched in 2016, focuses on a unique storyline revolving around the struggle of heroes Rain and Lasswell in an enchanted land named Lapis and featured “Visions,” characters acquired through the in-game gacha system, representing a blend of creatures, villains, and heroes from various Square Enix games.
Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius gained significant popularity owing to its crossover events featuring different titles, and even real-life singers like Katy Perry and Ariana Grande were playable characters within the game. Square Enix also rolled out a tactical spin-off of the game in 2019, ‘War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius’, which will continue operating. Although the game is available on both iOS and Android, its services will cease after October 30, 2024.
