Duncan Drummond and Paul Morse, co-founders of Hopoo Games, the studio behind Risk of Rain, have announced their move to Valve to develop new games. Several other team members from Hopoo Games are also joining them at Valve. Subsequently, Hopoo Games has ceased development on its unannounced title, a decision acknowledged with gratitude toward Valve for its partnership over the past decade, and excitement towards future projects at Valve.

Their shift to Valve puts a halt to their previously unannounced game, ‘Snail,’ with the future of Hopoo Games left unclear in their announcement. The studio might be going on hiatus or potentially shutting down, leaving fans with the message, “But for now–sleep tight, Hopoo Games.”

The founders, Duncan, and Paul, initially developed Risk of Rain as students and eventually created a 3D sequel in 2020. They also made a stealth-action game called Deadbolt in 2016 and recently released a reimagined version of Risk of Rain called Risk of Rain Returns. Gearbox Software acquired Risk of Rain 2 in 2022 and released paid DLC Seekers of the Storm, which was critically panned on Steam due to multiple bugs.
