Sony recently unveiled the PS5 Pro during the PS5 Technical Presentation hosted by Mark Cerny. The key focus of the presentation was the improved framerate capabilities of the new system, as developers are reportedly seeking framerates higher than the conventional 30fps or 60fps. Apparently, gamers tend to prefer Performance over Fidelity most of the time. Cerny described further that the PS5 Pro will have a 67% “larger” GPU with 28% faster RAM and will render at 45% faster speed. The console aims to enhance Ray Tracing speeds and introduce AI Upscaling, or PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution.
Game demonstrations were presented, revealing how the superior system can maintain enhanced framerates without compromising on game aesthetics. While the difference was perceptible, the upgraded visuals didn’t appear to justify the price tag of the PS5 Pro, which lacks a disc drive and costs $699.
Although some enthusiasts with generous budgets might appreciate the improvements, cinching the argument for the average consumer may be a task, given the marginal visual enhancement for the higher price. The perception that the same increase in value could be obtained by upgrading a GPU may detract from the appeal of the PS5 Pro. As such, the PS5 Pro may not be an upgrade for everyone.
