Microsoft recently made an announcement regarding the closure of the Xbox Ambassadors program, a successful program that has been operational for the past 13 years. The tech giant expressed its profound gratitude towards its fans for their unwavering support of the program throughout its run, but stated that necessary adjustments to fit “the needs of our global community” necessitated the decision.

The Xbox Ambassadors program, according to the statement, will cease operations after the current season wraps up in mid-October. Microsoft attributed this closure partly to the growing trend of Xbox gamers finding similar or even better value in other concurrent programs. These include the Xbox Insider program, Fanfest, and the Xbox Rewards program, all of which have enjoyed notable popularity among Xbox users.

Microsoft appreciated the evident impact that the Xbox Ambassadors program had on the universal gaming experience. By involving different individuals across the globe, gaming became a more inclusive and universal phenomenon, transcending geographical boundaries. Incorporating the values and lessons of the Ambassador community into the broader framework of player engagement programs seemed like a natural progression in light of these achievements.

However, this transition also implies that some aspects of the Xbox Ambassadors program need to be phased out. This includes seasonal Ambassador quests which will be replaced by the Rewards with Xbox and Xbox Research programs. Microsoft made a promise to divulge more details surrounding this adjustment in due time. With new feedback mechanisms through Xbox Research, Microsoft is trying to make it a more global platform for early access to new games and features and enabling gamers to improve the overall Xbox experience.

The Xbox Ambassador Champions system, another key feature of the Ambassador program, will also undergo transformation and will henceforth be known as the Xbox Community Champions. Microsoft acknowledged that the metamorphosis may be perceived as a loss by some participants, but reinforced the commitment to uphold an inclusive community of thoughtful players, promising that this conversion would help the Xbox platform continue to be a premier gaming locale.

Red-letter date for Xbox, October 15th, holds double significance as last day for claiming outstanding rewards for Xbox Ambassadors along with marking the program’s official offline date. To commemorate the Ambassadors contribution, Microsoft will confer a “special thank you” gift to members active during the latest season, the details of which are under wraps.

As a farewell gesture to the Ambassadors, Microsoft will host weekly sweepstakes until October 15, giving Ambassadors a last chance to use their ticket balance. Additionally, the exclusively given Xbox Ambassadors badge will receive a design upgrade affectionately referred to as a “legacy” design.

The closure of the Xbox Ambassadors program signals yet another significant shift in Microsoft’s Xbox business. It falls in line with a recent series of strategic modifications, most notably the unfortunate layoffs of over 2500 employees from the Xbox team since the beginning of 2024. Despite the recent upheavals, Microsoft remains optimistic as they continue to redefine their approach in offering Xbox users the ultimate gaming experience.
