The gaming world mourns the passing of Japanese video game industry legend, Masayuki Kato, the founder of Nihon Falcom. He passed away at the age of 78 on December 15, 2024. Nihon Falcom shared this news without releasing any details pertaining to the cause of the death, respecting the wishes of Masayuki Kato’s family to mourn privately.
Kato was a significant figure in the gaming universe, having pioneered Nihon Falcom in March 1981 and serving as its Representative Director. His leadership and innovative thinking guided the company to rise as a prominent game development organization in Japan. Then, more recently, in December 2023, he also took on the role of Chairman of the board of directors.
His untimely death now leaves a gap in the Nihon Falcom’s board of directors, a position they will be seeking to fill. Despite the loss of a chairman, the number of directors at Nihon Falcom does meet required regulations under Japanese law. Consequently, the operations and continuity of the business will remain unaffected.
Under Kato’s stewardship, Nihon Falcom made significant strides in the world of gaming. Their notable contributions include popular game creations like the Ys series, Xanadu series, and The Legend of Heroes series – the Trails games being a particularly standout creation. All these titles, and others, have contributed to shaping the incredible reputation that Nihon Falcom holds in the industry.
A prime example of their recent works include “Ys X: Nordics,” which hit the market on October 25, 2024, making waves on platforms like Switch, PS4, PS5, and PC. Fans of the company eagerly await the release of “The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak II,” slated for launch on February 14, 2025, on the same platforms. Further expanding their roster, they announced back in August 2024 that “The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st,” a full remake of the first title in their acclaimed Trails series, will be released on Switch in 2025.
