In recent gaming news, Nintendo has just unveiled the anticipated Nintendo Switch 2, and along with it, the first officially endorsed game to make its appearance on the new platform: Mario Kart 9. As engrossing as the former’s reveal was, it’s the latter that piqued insurmountable interest within the gaming community due to an assumed confirmation of a first-time feature: 24-person races.

An initial preview of the Nintendo Switch 2 was broad but concentrated primarily on the advancement of its hardware aspects. However, enough attention was given to the reveal of Mario Kart 9. From the sneak-peak offered, the Mario characters racing on what is expected to be the opening track hinted at a considerable alteration.

The beginning frames of the game showed 24 starter positions on the portal, a considerable increase from the customary 12 in earlier versions of the game. While one could argue that this might simply be an aesthetic upgrade, the concluding shots unmistakably showed at least 14 racers competing simultaneously on the track.

Furthermore, the track portrayed in the trailer appeared considerably broader than usual. This seems to suggest a purposeful modification to accommodate the heightened number of racers, thereby implying an augmented level of thrill and chaos that Nintendo plans to implement in this ninth installment of the fan favorite racing game, Mario Kart.

This shift isn’t much of a surprise given Nintendo’s penchant for leveraging advancements in technology to enhance user interface and gaming experience. Case in point, the company previously introduced eight-person brawls for the first time ever in its Wii U version of the fighting game Super Smash Bros. That was twice the number supported in preceding versions.

Gamers and fans of the Mario Kart series can look forward to a more detailed perspective of the new features and number of racers that Mario Kart 9 will support during the inaugural Nintendo Direct presentation on the Nintendo Switch 2, scheduled to take place in April.

Aside from the teaser about Mario Kart 9, the preview for the new console also confirmed a couple of upgrades. These include a backward compatibility attribute and the exciting addition of a second USB-C port. Nevertheless, a significant amount of aspects were deliberately left out of the spotlight during the reveal.

A considerable number of details surrounding Nintendo Switch 2 and its other games are awaiting confirmation. The gaming community is especially intrigued by the function of an enigmatic button on the new Joy-Con, a feature that remained intentionally vague during the announcement. Though speculation is rife, one theory that has garnered noticeable attention is that this new button might function like a mouse.

Ryan Dinsdale, who is a freelance gaming journalist, is keen to discuss everything about the new console and its games. This includes the new Mario Kart, as he has a soft spot for the charming characters and immersive gameplay experience the series offers.

Further updates about the Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 are eagerly awaited by the gaming community, who are counting down to the comprehensive reveal in April’s Nintendo Direct.
