Limited Run Games, a reputable publisher of retro video games, recently verified allegations that they released game cartridges that could potentially harm NES gaming consoles. The issue was reported to be caused by a switch in the production supplier, and Limited Run Games has subsequently expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused.
Earlier in the week, Jordi Gutiérrez Hermoso, an enthusiastic retro gamer, expressed his concerns about the potentially harmful effect of the NES game cartridges produced by Limited Run Games. He demonstrated that the company was retailing classic NES games on 3.3V cartridges. The compatibility issue arose because these were not in alignment with the 5V NES consoles that they were used in. He further clarified the issue by explaining that parts on the game cartridge’s board could draw power from incompatible signals, which would gradually deteriorate the cartridge and the NES console in the process. Hermoso pointed out that two games, in particular, Rugrats: Adventures in Gameland and PioPow, seemed to be impacted by the flaw.
In response to the accusations, an official spokesperson from Limited Run Games verified and accepted the charges. The spokesperson explained: “After being alerted by our community about this issue, we began in-depth investigations. We can confirm that due to a problem related to voltage regulation, continuous use of these specific titles may possess a slight risk that could ultimately damage the console hardware or the cartridge itself.”
Limited Run Games added that the manufacturer responsible for the problematic cartridges had only participated in developing an extremely limited number of titles. The company is currently in the process of reviewing their previous collaboration with the said manufacturer to investigate any other potential issues. Meanwhile, Limited Run Games has committed to delivering replacement cartridges to its customers affected by the issue. Moreover, it has presented refunds as an alternative solution to those who seek compensation for the malfunctioning products.
Limited Run Games is renowned for publishing retro game titles, often providing a bridge for fans to revisit classic gaming experiences. With this development, the company shows its readiness to address issues that may affect the satisfaction of its loyal customers.
