Nearly two and a half decades after its initial PlayStation debut, Capcom’s timeless RPG masterpiece, Breath of Fire 4, has made a triumphant re-emergence on the digital platform GOG. This latest reappearance is a result of the ongoing collaboration between Capcom and GOG, a partnership that has already revived numerous vintage games, including the first three iterations of Resident Evil and the first two Dino Crisis titles.

Breath of Fire 4 initially touched down on the fledgling PlayStation platform back in 2000. Subsequent incarnations saw the game ported to the PC in 2003 and the unit packaged as a PSOne Classic for the PlayStation 3, PSP and PS Vita in 2011. Regrettably, none of these iterations were compatible with modern systems. However, GOG’s release has transformed the scene dramatically.

With this recent GOG variant, Breath of Fire 4 is now playable on contemporary PC setups running on Windows 10 or 11. Moreover, the game now features compatibility with the latest controllers such as the DualSense, DualShock 4, as well as Xbox and Switch controllers.

Set amidst a prolonged conflict between the western and eastern continents, the plot revolves around the mysterious disappearance of Princess Elina. Propelled by worry and desperation, her sister, Nina, and Cray the Woren set off on a dangerous quest to find her. Their quest’s course alters dramatically when they encounter a young man named Ryu, who possesses no memory beyond his name but holds the extraordinary ability to transform into a dragon. Concurrently, the ancient ruler Fou-Lou awakens from his slumber, determined to reclaim the throne he reluctantly abandoned due to adversities long past.

The GOG release contains numerous enhancements poised to make the gameplay experience smoother and the visuals sharper. An optimized DirectX renderer, multiple rendering alternatives, and system settings that include a Windowed Mode, Vertical Synchronization toggles, gamma values adjustments, and the capability to employ anti-aliasing and integer scaling, all contribute to vastly improved visual aesthetics at elevated resolutions.

In addition, the sound engine overhaul ensures the complete retention of environmental sounds and grants players the leeway to fine-tune the audio. Multiple improvements have addressed the game’s propensity to crash under certain conditions related to in-game combat, task-switching and cinematic scripting.

The GOG release also endows users with the capacity to toggle between English and Japanese texts. Simultaneously, it offers enhanced support for a variety of control mechanisms, such as the keyboard, mouse, and gaming controllers. On the gameplay side, noticeable enhancements have been made to the Warehouse and Crane mini-games. Further settings allow players to custom-configure button binding, vibration, and hotplugging capabilities for their chosen game controllers. GOG has curated an exclusive video exploring these upgrades and their significance in providing a superior gaming experience.

Breath of Fire IV’s inclusion on the GOG platform is a testament to the platform’s commitment to preserving classic games in a digital age. This game was added to the platform’s Dreamlist system, and it acquired more than 20,000 votes from players expressing their keen interest in seeing the game on GOG.

By releasing this revitalized version of a timeless classic, GOG has once again demonstrated its commitment to harmonizing nostalgia and modern gaming conveniences, enriching the player experience and taking it to unprecedented levels. This release stands as a testament to GOG’s dedication to preserving the charm of classical gaming in a rapidly evolving digital world.
